Party Rocking In The House | Calgary Birthday Party Photography

I’m not a huge celebrator of holidays.  If I had it my way Christmas would take place on a beach in Costa Rica and I’d skip Easter all together.  I’m just not a huge fan.  However when it comes to birthdays I take the exact opposite approach.

I think BIRTHDAYS ARE A BIG EFFING DEAL!

Straight up lasting another year here on this little planet of ours is a big deal so I believe in celebrating the crap out of it! Because of my perhaps over the top love of Birthdays I am also known to throw down a mean kids Birthday Party!  Some might say that I have a problem.  I think I have a gift!

This year Danger wanted a Jessie the yodelling cow girl birthday party.  Easy enough I thought, cowboy hats, bandanas, maybe some chaps who knows but how do I take it to the “next level”.  Then it struck me!  A cardboard western toy a la Toy Story opening scene reenactment.  The vision was born, appliance boxes were collected weekly from Home Depot and food planning began.  With a little bit of help from friends, a lot of crazy moments the right supplies we threw down (in my opinion) one of the best 4th Birthday Parties in the history of Birthday Parties.

Here are a few images I was able to create with the help of my buddy Sarah Vaughan

so here’s the thing…

Birthday parties are a lot of work.  If you are like me you put in hours of planning, decorating and last minute preparations to make sure that everything is perfect then it’s all over in what seems like a flash!  I’m a photographer, yet I still didn’t manage to get even one picture of Danger on her own with her Western Village, a picture of the sugar cookies turned into Jessie Cowgirl Hats or any of the balloon decorations set up all of the back yard.  It’s hard to be the photographer, the mom and the party host.

Because of my party rocking experience this year that wasn’t fully captured I’ve decided it’s time to start offering Birthday Party Coverage with a twist.

AWESOME RIGHT?

I show up and spend some quality time with the birthday kid getting their new big kid portraits while you run around putting the final touches on things.  Then I run around capturing all the little details of your event until your guest get there.  Once the party starts I’m capturing every fantastic moment so you can worry about everything else but taking photographs!

MOTHERLOVER | Sneak Peeks Coming atcha

This Saturday while most of you rad folks were at home snuggling under the covers or feeding your tiny humans pancakes I was hanging out at Fish Creek park with some fun folks just being awesome.

We got lucky and had some wicked weather and although my hot water tank happened to spontaneously combust, cold water or not I still managed to shower for you fine folks… it’s ’cause I care.  You can thank me later!

So because I’m swell and have been working away tirelessly and ignoring my kids just the right amount here are your sneak peeks kids!

Black & Yellow | Calgary Wedding Photographer

“Yeah, yeah, you know what it is. Black and yellow, black and yellow, black and yellow, black and yellow” – Wiz Khalifa

Although I’m a photographer not a musician it’s pretty common that I think in music.  I dig a good jam, what can I say.  When Stephanie from Dream Wedding Productions pitched this wedding to me my mind immediately went to the Wiz Khalifa song, ’cause let’s face it, it’s a great song. I had a hard time not breaking into song in the middle of Earl’s.  It may have been inappropriate, so I held it in.

Although this styled wedding was not inspired by my boy Wiz.  It was still pretty rad.  Thanks to Bethany and Graham for being gorgeous and so ridiculously awesome to work with. I’m a fan of your faces!  Another big thanks to all the folks that came together to make sure everything was rad and of course a huge thanks to Sirocco Golf Course for having such friggen awesome food!

Danger’s 4 | Personal

Dearest Danger,

Two weeks ago you turned FOUR and it’s straight up blowing my mind.  So much so that it took me until now to be able to write this post to you.  I’m also a chronic procrastinator, just get used to it.

You Danger are possibly the raddest kid to ever live.  You are spunky, and nerdy and girly all at once.  You’ve got this sparkle in your eye that tells of mischief.  In many ways you are a tiny version of myself with blonde hair and way more self esteem. In other ways you are a way better amped up version of me and in some ways I can’t even believe you are my child.

You much like myself refuse to wear dresses because “where are the pants” you love music, you’re lanky and awkward, you have big hands for your age.  You have an imagination that makes me look like an accountant and man can you dance.  Although you hate dresses your favourite colour is pink with purple as a close second.  You are petite and delicate and girlie beyond belief. You also think that your butt is the single most hilarious thing on the entire planet.  You do butt dances, you rub it on people and you toot, a lot.

This past week we asked you if you want to take Ballerina Camp over the summer.  You thought about it for a second, and said “ummm how about I go to Karate camp instead”.  The way you say KAAARRRAAAAATAAAAY cracks me up every time.

This year you started preschool.  I can’t say enough good things about the experience.  School is your absolute favourite and has opened your mind to more than I could imagine.  You are a SPONGE.  You come home everyday naming me the parts of a plant, the foods that make horses happy or the many possible reasons that may have caused the extinction of dinosaurs.  In short you are quickly becoming smarter than me.

(photos you took on your indestructible camera…note to self: get you a better camera)

As far as the future goes you have decided that when you grow up you want to be a “picture lady”  and a mom.  I’m okay with both but I’m secretly hoping you’ll become a doctor instead.  You care a lot about people and how they feel.  You care that our neighbour is being nice to his little sister.  You care that our dog Stella’s feelings aren’t hurt.  You care that the horses in their trailer that are parked at Costco while their owners are inside don’t get lonely or too warm.  You care that the bird perched on our fence “must be lost and misses his mommy”. You care. A lot.  I hope that you don’t ever lose that.  I do hope you stop sucking your thumb soon.

You Danger are the most amazing girl I have ever met and I am so proud to be your mama, even if that does mean you might rub your ass on me 3 more times today.

Nikki, You are beautiful inside and out and that’s why your daughter is beautiful too. She is a lucky girl and so am I to have the priviledge of knowing you and watching you children grow. She will love to see this when she gets older and know how much she is loved. You’re an awesome Mom. Xoxo

I love your birthday posts. *Sigh*

Shannon KMay 24, 2012 - 5:28 am

Hahahahaha and {tear} all at the same time. She is most definitely the raddest little being alive. I hope that she teaches my babies a thing or two about having spunk. You know that the reason she oozes awesome is because the apple didn’t fall far from the tree..or whatever that expression is. She’s a mini-Nikki and I love you both to pieces.
